According to Dr. Devi, the most important aspects in dental implant treatment planning are:

  • Evaluation of patients medical history to assess risk factor
  • Presence of adequate foundation bone
  • How many teeth are missing, Is soft tissue missing as well
  • Does patient need facial support with Implant restoration
  • What kind of restoration is the most appropriate, conservative and affordable for the situation presented

Typically, the Implant treatments are divided in to three steps

Step I - Extraction and Bone Graft

When patient is presented with teeth that are severely decayed, broken, damaged, or infected, they need to be extracted. Sometimes, the infection has spread to many teeth and the underlaying bone is depleted (eaten away) and patient may have only minor pain and discomfort. A CBCT scan is taken to evaluate the condition of the tooth and the supporting bone to make the correct treatment decisions.

The Bone Graft procedure is done typically at the time of the tooth extraction to fill the extraction socket, repair damage to the jaw bone and create a solid foundation for future implants. The Bone Graft material is a mixture of allograft-xenograft mixed with growth factors from patients own blood. We will draw the blood from patient at the time of surgery, complete a centrifugal process to separate the growth factors for this purpose. The typical healing time is 4-5 months. Patients may wear a retainer to cover the extraction site so that they can continue with their normal routine. More information about Bone Grafting is given under procedures.

Step II - Implant Placement

The extraction and bone graft site is ready for an implant placement approximately 4-5 months after the initial surgery. A CBCT scan of the jaw bone will be performed to evaluate the healing of the extraction site and quantity and density of the jaw bone at the site. A digital guide will be made for precision implant placement at the site considering the available bone and emergence profile of the new implant tooth. The usage of the digital guide avoid many potential problems with implant placement and the future restoration. The implant placement surgery is a minor surgical procedure. The implant is screwed into the jaw bone at the prescribed location and pre-determined angle with the help of the guide and patient is allowed to heal for 3 months.

Step III - Restoration of the Implant or Implants

Restoration is the third and final step of the dental implant treatment process. The best restoration option will depend on factors like how many teeth are missing, the patient's need for facial support, and what is considered the most appropriate, conservative, and affordable for the situation presented.
